Question by : Will internet fax work for my business if our fax & business numbers are the same? We recieve a lot of faxes a day and are looking into buying an external modem so that we can just receive them on our computer so that we can view them to see if we actually need them before we print them off.. But our business phone number is the same as our fax phone number, we just pick up the phone and if it's a fax we hit the start button on the fax machine. Will an external fax modem work for us? I read an artical that when you set up your fax program will have you set when it should pick up the fax (like after 2 rings) Will it automatically just know when it's a fax and pick it up? I'm worried that when customers call us that it will be trying to pick up a fax while we are trying to talk. Please help me! One of the best solution for your business productivity is to switch to an internet fax service provider...most of them do not charge for fax reception, only for sending....for instance for only 49.99 eur /year you can receive up to 500 fax pages/month for free it's about 6000 faxes /year. I'd definitely go with an Internet fax service so you don't have the problem of sending your customers' phone calls to the fax machine. That seems like a risky situation in itself. If you use Internet fax, you can have faxes sent to your email account and/or your desktop software depending upon the provider. With this kind of fax service you can typically choose from a local or toll-free number so that your customers won't have to pay to fax you. This should improve communication and customer satisfaction. When choosing an Internet fax service, make sure you get one that meets all of your needs (e.g. pages per month, customer support hours, methods of sending and receiving faxes, etc.). If you opt to use an email fax service, you'll get your own virtual fax number (local or toll-free) at the moment of signing up. with this you should have no problems with your business phone. receiving faxes this way is automatic so you don't have to pick up the phone and hear a line - they will be automatically forwarded toy our email account as an attachment (usually a PDF file).

I'm not aware of any on-line fax service that would allow you to share your existing phone line for calls and faxes. Personally, I tried the "line sharing" approach for a while. It's possible to do, using a fax modem connected to your PC. I forget the one I used (they're all pretty similar), but it had a mode that allowed it "listen" to the call for fax tones and answer as a fax if it heard them, but it turned out to be more trouble that it was worth. What I ended up with is a service from FaxLogic that lets me use my existing fax machine without a phone line. The machine works just like it did with a phone line, but I pay about $ 15/month for what the rest of the world sees as a separate dedicated fax line with its own number. I personally use the machine for sending only, and have my incoming faxes sent to my email, but you can do either. And if you don't want the email and web fax features, I think there's a plan for under $ 10/month that doesn't have these (although I have found them very useful). Anyway, it's a lot cleaner that trying to share the one line.
